The New York State Bar Association Annual Meeting
It was a pleasure seeing everyone at yesterday’s gathering of the New York State Bar Association Dispute Resolution Law Section during the New York State Bar Association's Annual Meeting, held at the New York Hilton Midtown.
Following a productive Executive Committee meeting, the Section elected the new slate of Officers to begin their term this June. Congratulations, and many thanks in advance, to anticipated service go to the following incoming officers: Loretta Gastwirth, Esq. – Chair, Jennifer Lupo – Chair-Elect, Chris McDonald – Vice Chair, Marilyn K Genoa – Secretary, Gregory Classon – Treasurer. We are fortunate to have this lineup for the 2026-27 term.
Elections were followed by the presentation of the Charles M. Newman Award to Professor Lela Porter Love and, posthumously, to Professor Elayne Greenberg. This was a beautiful event. Chuck Newman’s wife, Libby and his daughter Eliza, attended the ceremony, which honors those from the Dispute Resolution or Mediation field who exemplify Chuck’s qualities: brilliance of mind, greatness of heart, generosity of engagement with the ADR Community – a mentor to many and teacher to all.
The Awards were presented by Dispute Resolution Section Chair, William Crosby, first to Elayne’s son, Carey, and then to Lela Love, in person. Ross Kartez, a former student of Elayne, introduced the Award for Elayne, crediting her mentorship through St. John's University’s mediation clinic and beyond, with his having joined the Dispute Resolution Section and eventually serving as its youngest Chair, and for his engagement and success in the Dispute Resolution field. I had the opportunity to introduce the Award to Lela. My comments adding to Ross’s on Elayne, and introducing Lela, are posted below. Lela Love then favored the attendees with inspiring remarks on varieties of dispute resolution, including a piece on images of justice, arbitration and mediation.
